An Australian Christmas is full of traditions, some adopted from overseas, and others that are completely apart of Australia’s culture. Another thing that is safe to assume is everyone loves a Christmas dessert, so we have curated a list of our favourite Aussie Chrissy dessert traditions.
Pavlova
Technically, the Aussie pav that we know and love is from New Zealand (but we have well and truly adopted it!) The pav is a dessert favourite because it’s so versatile. You can top it with any fruit you like, and even include a sauce if you so desire. You really can’t go wrong with kiwi fruit, blueberries and strawberries!
Pudding
Always a crowd favourite! Pudding is a Christmas tradition everywhere and Australia is no exception. It is a great dessert because it’s made in advance and it will still be good to go by Chrissy lunch or dinner! Top it with some warm custard and a dollop of cream or a scoop of ice cream and you have a winner!
Trifle
Trifle comes from our mother country, England, but it has definitely become a staple on our tables. Layered with fruit and sponge cake soaked in sherry and custard – is there a better combination? We don’t think so!
Rum Balls
These sweet treats are the perfect after-dinner snack. Rich enough for a dessert, but small enough if you’re still recovering from the huge Christmas feast but still want a little sweetness.
You really can’t have a Christmas in Australia without these desserts! We hope you enjoy!
